The European Commission
together with the Polish Presidency organised a conference in Warsaw on 24-25
November to celebrate the 20th anniversary of European social dialogue. Many of
the presentations made on the conferences 9 panels took a retrospective look at
the achievements achieved by the European partners, highlighting also
difficulties of the concept, stemming from the fact that social dialogue is
non-existent in several countries, in particular from the EU-12.
CEEMET General Secretary
Uwe Combuechen attended and expressed strong reservations about an idea that
social partners should reach more binding agreements. Commissioner Andor,
highlighted the important role of European social dialogue dating back to the
social partners agreement of 1991 which evolved first into the social protocol
in the Maastricht Treaty. Many speeches and contributions addressed the
different phases of development of the European social dialogue
