Carcinogens & Mutagens Directive agreement: Not perfect

Today the Council’s CORPER meeting voted on an agreement reached by the Council presidency, Parliament and Commission on the Commission’s first proposal to amend the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive to set new or stricter exposure limits for several cancer-causing chemicals in the workplace.

CEEMET welcomes the revision of this Directive and see its benefit as a method to protect workers from exposure to carcinogens and mutagens.

However, there are a number of factors which need to be considered and which are developed in the position paper on Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive (CMD).

The current CMD is not perfect as companies feel that the burden is out of balance. This translates into rules -lay down in the CMD- that are difficult to implement for companies and particularly SMEs.
